HELP US SKILL PREGNANT TEENAGERS IN OUR SLUM

In April 2020, the government of Uganda imposed a total lockdown because of covid19. Due to this directive, the community of Kamwokya where 90% of the dwellers live on less than a dollar everyday, has registered a big number of hunger stricken families. Little girls who were sent home from schools which are still closed, have been forced to do odd jobs to get a meal for themselves and their loved ones. In search for food, majority of these girls get enticed by older men who offer them a meal or money in exchange of sex. In July alone, defilement cases stood at 175 girls in Kampala and in June, defilement cases stood at 163 girls.

While we stay unaware of when schools will open again for the young people to study and be safe, these teen mothers who got impregnated under unfortunate circumstances will not be allowed in the classroom in their condition and majority of them may never go back to school ever again in their lifetime. 

Caring hearts Uganda is embarking on a skill training project to build a future of economic independence for these girls. We believe that when enrolled to our tailoring class for three months, these pregnant girls will eventually become economically self reliant and they will be able to look after themselves and their babies in future. 

Caring hearts uganda, an NGO which has been working to improve menstrual hygiene among young people of Uganda since 2012, has done this project before and registered success stories one of them being that of this teen mother who was picked from a stone quarry and taken to a tailoring class and today, her full time economic activity is tailoring.

We are therefore appealing to everyone to support our sewing machine tailoring program by donating towards the purchase of manual sewing machines, buying all required materials for three months training, money to buy lunch for the girls, trainer's salaries, counseling services and antenatal sessions. We have been offered a place where we shall conduct our training so rent for our training center is already covered.
