Help 26 refugee candidates pay for national examination fees

The future of young refugees in Nyarugusu camp, they need to master English

Worried about their future, young refugees in Nyarugusu camp face barriers to accessing local institutions of higher education due to two main reasons:

FIRST, the primary and secondary education follows Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) curriculum, using French as medium of instruction. As a result those who pass their secondary education (form six) examinations cannot afford to write, speak and listen correctly English, the instruction language in all higher learning institutions in Tanzania and the requirement for several tertiary scholarship programs available for refugees.

SECOND, Our experience shows that after successfully passing their exams, they have to wait for at least 3 years to get their original certificates after passing form six examinations because the DRC’s authority responsible for issuing original certificates delays to do so. Again, when certificates are issued it takes years to reach in the camp. Consequently all form six leavers cannot dare to apply for admissions in host country higher learning institutions as copies of certificates have to be attached when applying and original certificates are needed during registration process.

The solution

To curb that problem, RAI has introduced an accelerated learning program in Nyarugusu Camp for young refugees that enables them to complete secondary education using the host country curriculum which uses English as the medium of instruction.

Since using foreign curriculum, UNHCR couldn't cover the examinations fee

Whereas UNHCR supports all examination cost for students who sit for national exams administered by the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), our candidates are not covered under that scheme because they are following the host country curriculum and are expected to sit for national exams administered by the government of Tanzania, the host country. Examination cost should therefore incurred by students themselves. We are sure that without support from well wishers like you these students will not afford to get the examinations fee which is approximately 25 USD per candidate. We therefore ask for your support.

The timeline

Since the registration periods for students who want to sit for national exams are normally between January and February each academic year, we would much appreciate it to get the fund by the end of January 2021.

Expected candidates doing their mid term tests

With your donation we will be enable to pay for national examinations fees for 26 students expected to sit for their exams in 2021. These students are following the non-formal education system opportunity run under the Institute of Adult Education of Tanzania to provide secondary education to out of school girls and boys using English language as medium of instruction and thus acquire eligibility criteria to access higher education opportunities.
