KVC implemented hands on project-based courses with curriculum from Bit Space Chicago (United States) which is unique course in Kakuma Camp to empower children and teenagers from ages 10 to 18 years old with the skills and knowledge that increased their self-confidence to avoid becoming victims of violence or other negative influences. This design thinking project is helping to improve the thought processes of children in the camp whether they attend local schools or not and helps them focus more on creativity which expands their knowledge base and can bring them more opportunities.

The Bit Space activities after school increase their creativity which involves using technology and tools rather than using this time to roam around or engaging in risky activities which might result in drug abuse or dropping out of school. In addition, this helps to decrease the chances of teenage girls getting pregnant. It offers opportunities of inclusion into the society by motivating them to embrace school because they are collaborating with others in critical thinking and engaging in activities which enable them to be more creative thinkers and problem solvers.

Moreover, after making a game with wood they can sell it to other children in the camp instead of ending up in child labour or with mental health problems.

Due to the success of Bit Space, the KVC has decided to add a Makerspace at the center to offer more options to youth in the camp for learning skills mentioned above. Makerspaces provide hands-on, creative ways to encourage students to design, experiment, build and invent as they learn about science and engineering. A makerspace is not solely a science lab, woodshop, computer lab or art room, but it may also contain elements found in all of these.

The goal of a Makerspace is to empower students to see themselves as inventors, builders and creators. It gives them a place to learn new skills through trial and error, experiencing failure of an initial idea, the exploration of possible alternatives and then problem solving to improve on the idea.  It develops self-confidence and an appreciation for the learner’s own ability to imagine, develop and build projects.

We want to make sure our trainees will not go back to their homes as they have come. We want them equipped with the skills they need to succeed in life and work.
