About Potala Girls Club

Hello everyone,

Potala Girls Club for Humanity is a group of women from the Potala Carpet Community that hopes to help our less fortunate brothers and sisters around us by providing readymade lunchboxes.

As mothers, sisters, and daughters, we are sympathetic to the plight of families made homeless and food insecure due to financial difficulties because of the poorly planned, government-imposed lockdown of Nepal.

We want to play our own small role in combatting the virus by helping those that have been most affected by it in the Capital city of Kathmandu. By doing so, we hope we can inspire others to do the same because only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile.

Our COVID Relief project

Hot Meals is a COVID Relief project by the Potala Girls Club for Humanity to help the hundreds of displaced daily-wage workers, beggars, and street children of Kathmandu, Nepal, by running food drives to feed the unemployed and homeless in our community.

Due to the nationwide lockdowns, hundreds of daily-wage workers, unable to pay rent or buy food for their families, have found themselves struggling to survive in the streets.

The street children and beggars in the community have also been badly affected as they cannot rely on the handouts of their regular benefactors who are stuck at home. We aim to serve these desperate people by distributing fresh, homemade lunchboxes and other basic essentials such as soap.

Usage of the funds

Hot Meals is a volunteer initiative that we have started to help the underprivileged people in our community by distributing pack lunches and basic essentials like soap. We felt an obligation to do this because we found that there were hundreds of people and families that have been displaced and unable to buy food because of the government imposed lockdowns (in response to COVID). We distribute 400 meals on each run and so far have been able to provide 3600 meals in total.

We spent about Nepali Rs. 25,000 to host one meal drive of 400 meals which comes up to Rs. 62.50 for each meal. Our goal in Airfunding is to gather as much as we can to continue our work for as long as we can. Apart from Rs. 250 x 7 per drive, for the fueling costs of the 7 scooters we use for distribution and a one time purchase of Rs. 2500 for masks and gloves for our volunteers, all the money collected is used to purchase food (whatever type of veggies are the cheapest in the market, chicken, and rice) and supplies (takeaway boxes and cooking gas).

All the money collected will be used solely to buy food supplies and packaging for the project.

We ask that you stand with us in aiding our brothers and sisters, bereft of basic necessities like food and shelter, in their fight for survival. While we understand the financial impact of this pandemic on everyone, we must remember that there are some among us in much worse shape.
