It is about giving second chances - Please help me bail out Ikay from Jail

Hello everyone, I am Rosalie Castro, I was detained for two nights for alleged violation of a City Ordinance related to the COVID-pandemic and for resisting and dis-obeying persons in Authority.

Being in jail is traumatic physically and mentally and (take it from me) it is surely something you would never forget for the rest of your life – even if the reason for you being there is minuscule (like you just happen to be dealing with difficult people- like in my case, the people manning a traffic checkpoint).

an unforgettable experience in detention center

Those two horrible nights not only taught me so many things but also more importantly made me see that (indeed) the poorest of the poor are the ones left in Jail. Food, water, and other basic necessities are among the daily challenges the detainees are facing.

We have got to share whatever we have- be it a piece of bread, a cup of coffee, shampoo, including our worries and concerns. The women treat each other like sisters- from exchanging clothes to crying whenever one cries, laughing, singing, and sometimes arguing but it really feels like they are there for each other.

We come from a lower economic class family

Of the seven fellow detainees – not one of them comes from a middle-class family. For example, one comes from a family who lives in a cemetery—using a “ rich dead person’s home” as their abode, most lives in a poor urban neighborhood, and anyway please just imagine how it is living in an urban poor community in a third world country.

It is difficult to imagine how would a person detained coming from a super poor family raises money for bail when even to have food is already a big challenge. I surely could tell how it is – and the difference between one who has some resources and connections to one who has almost nothing.

Thus, even if the crimes committed are bailable, many poorest detainees remain in jail. The family usually tries to find money or detainees (with drug charges) may contact their ‘employers’.

Help me to bail out Ikay from Jail

Who is Ikay (the lady in pink)?

She is a beautiful young mother despite the circumstances she had been through. She used to have five kids. however, she said two died due to sickness. So she has three now—two children live with her present partner and one life with the family of her past partner. She is now seven months pregnant for her supposed sixth kid. Hopefully, she is out of Jail by the time she delivers her baby.

Ikay’s mother committed suicide when she was seven years old, thus she grew up with her grandmother who was so poor herself. Despite being in the city, Ikay only finished grade two schoolings. She said that as a kid what they do every morning is to collect useful carbage which they could sell so that they will have money for food and other needs. Upon becoming a lady, she started working in a bar even until she already has kids. She told me that it was her first time to carry/deliver drugs the day she was caught by the police. She is truthful, I believe.

Yes, she sold drugs which is a menace to society but doesn’t Ikay deserve a second chance – just like how we all think we deserve when we fail on something. And Imagine how the kids are without her, how Ikay is feeling herself to be away from her kids. As a mom myself, I know exactly how it feels.

Ikay needs about 550$ for her bail

Bailing Ikay does not only benefit her but likewise her kids. Their fate would be like that of Ikay who grew up motherless.

As per Ikay's statement- she needs 20,000 PESOS for her bail, however, It would be good if I could raise more that can help her during her delivery and to start a new life-- she said she would like to move to another place to be away from those individuals who are into the illegal drug business.

Lastly, Imagine how Ikay is feeling now with her heavy bulging tummy. I can not over-emphasize how physically and mentally challenging it is to be in jail all the more for a pregnant woman.

LET NOT HARDSHIPS PREVENT US FROM LOVING AND HELPING EACH OTHER. AND WHAT WE GIVE WILL RETURN TO US A THOUSAND FOLD.
