Story
It’s probably fair to say that 2020 has been a tough year for most of us. It’s been filled with worry, uncertainty, and changes to the fundamental routines that we’ve built for ourselves. Most of us suffered from some level of anxiety, even if our lives were only minimally affected. As we are nearing the end of the year, why not do something to give back to nature?
We are a group of students trying to raise funds for Malayan tigers, which is the least known and most critically endangered of all tiger subspecies, and they are nearing extinction. The Malayan tiger is now officially listed as Critically Endangered under the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, which is alarming as this majestic creature, which proudly flanks our jata negara, is the iconic symbol of national pride for all Malaysians. To lose the tiger to extinction is akin to losing our national pride and identity.
While a degraded forest might survive and recover on its own, endangered wildlife does not stand a chance against humans who are intent on harming it. The sad reality is fragile wildlife needs and relies on dedicated conservationists to stop poaching and protect the ecosystem it calls home. Tiger’s population have declined, from 3000 in the 1950's down to 200 today, and they are exceedingly threatened by poaching and habitat loss.
All the funds raised will be donated to WWF-Malaysia to carry out fieldwork research, monitoring, patrolling, policy work with the government and community programmes to raise public awareness.
If you are unable to donate at this time, you can advocate for us by sharing our message with a family member or friend. Even a quick mention on your social media would mean the world to us. In times like these, we are reminded of how interconnected we all are. Your support is greatly appreciated.
