My name is Bethania Ortiz, my 17-year-old son Johan Duarte, a sportsman, practiced water polo, goalkeeper, and captain of his team in Guayaquil and I say practice because in July 2020 he was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma of the left tibia, (bone cancer) since July he has been receiving chemotherapy.
On December 28, the treating physician informed us that the chemotherapies have not worked, they did not reduce the tumor which was objective to perform a salvage surgery in which The only thing that we had to do was to remove the affected bone and place a bone graft, but since the chemotherapies had failed, we were informed that the leg would have to be amputated.
How does a young athlete assimilate this? Well, that is our struggle, today we are looking for the possibility of obtaining a diagnosis from abroad that will still allow us to preserve his limb.
