Prosthetic leg for my Dad

Hello everyone,

My name is Emma. I am the proud daughter of Piet Faber, Free Sate, South Africa.

This story is of his life this past year: My Dad has diabetes and hasn't got a lot of feeling left in his foot. He stepped into a thorn without knowing. Later, it became a problem.

My Mom tried to treat it to the best of her ability for days but ended up having to take him to Universitas State Hospital in Bloemfontein. My parents are State pensioners and do not have medical aid. The doctors amputated his toe to the first knuckle. It didn't heal, so they had to amputate further. They cut the whole bone of his toe out. My Dad was in excruciating pain by then, but when we talked, he was always hopeful that they will not amputate his leg. The next morning he went for a procedure to open up his veins that was calcified. The Doctors then decided to amputate the rest of his foot.

That was a difficult time for him, alone and scared in hospital. We couldn't see him because of the Covid rules. The Doctors then amputated the rest of his leg to under his knee. 5 surgeries in 3 months! Depression hit him hard for weeks afterwards. With my Mom's loving care and God's Grace, my Dad made it through depression and is now ready to look the world in the eye, proud of the fact that he came out STRONG.
