WHO WE ARE

We are a small start-up family project that started growing herbs and vegetables for sale to exporters in mid-2019 under the company

Our main objective was aimed at production of high quality herbs and vegetables that meet international standards to create a sustainable source of income for the less fortunate members of our community specifically unemployed young single mothers, by engaging them to provide labour for various activities on the farm.

LOCATION

Jungle Harvest Ltd is a smallholder farm located in Murang'a County, Gatanga Sub-County, Kenya East Africa, about 56 KM North of the City of Nairobi. The contact person is Charles Mbarire, (a Director), Tel +254 722 697 317, mbarire@gmail.com.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

Jungle Harvest Ltd started a Herbs and Vegetables farming venture to supply high quality products and to provide employment for the continued increased numbers of the growing population of young single mothers without specialized skills and have jobs to be able to provide reasonable livelihood to their families. Murang'a County is situated in a rural set up where poverty is a big problem with majority of the residents living below the poverty line earning less than a dollar per day. This mainly results in many young people dropping out of school, with young girls getting early pregnancies and children.

The activities started of in July/August 2019 by employing three young unmarried mothers to grow herbs and vegetables. As market for the products grew, we were able to increase the number of ladies to nine and two men. This was after investing in good infrastructure on the farm that included putting about one acre of land under drip irrigation and construction of three greenhouses through a loan facility that we are yet to complete payment. We hoped to increase the number of employees as we expected the business to grow further.

Covid-19 pandemic just hit us at the time that we were already supplying herbs to three exporters and the growth of the business was quite promising.

The Government of Kenya imposed Covid-19 protocols from mid March 2020 which affected our business because of restricted movement and social distancing measures. The biggest impact impact was when the country was in total local down when there were no flights and the exporters could not buy any produce. This forced us to destroy the crops as we could not maintain it any more because of the uncertainties brought in by the pandemic.

This ended up in our decision to lay off all the young mothers who even todate continue asking for help from us when they are not able to fend for their families.

We have planned to start slowly getting back to production despite that we have a lot of pressure in paying back the loan and lack of enough resources to procure seeds and inputs as well as enough labour to carry on the activities.

We also had challenges with quality of the products due to lack of a coldroom that resulted in about 25% loss of the produce due to high temperature.

Our packhouse is also not upto the required standards and needs some improvement to facilitate efficient processing, packaging and storage of the fresh produce.

BUDGET & UTILIZATION OF REQUESTED FUNDS

1. Seedlings, Farm inputs & Labour - 2,000.00 USD

2. Pack House Improvement - 1,500.00 USD

3. Coldroom Installation - 6,000.00 USD

4. Miscellaneous - 500.00 USD

5. Total - 10,000.00 USD

The main reason for making the funding request is to cater for the above activities which will go a long way in making the business more sustainable and achieve its objectives.

TIMELINES

As indicated on the proposed deadline earlier on the first page, our proposed date is before 30th October 2021. The reasons are:

1. Assuming that funds can start coming in bits, we shall be able upscale the production (Seeds, Inputs and Labour) such that by 15th October we shall be in the market. The high season for herbs market from Kenya is normally October to March.

2. We shall be able to upgrade the packhouse and install the cold room by 15th October when the season will be at peak.
