Protect Children Against Malaria

The END Malaria in Nigeria is a project by Humanity and Community Development Foundation which seeks to protect children, particularly those under 5, in rural areas from the devastating impact of malaria in their lives. For these vulnerable children, their continuous battle with malaria not only has wider implications for their long-term development, it is a matter of life or death.

In Nigeria, the UNICEF/Federal Government of Nigeria Situation Analysis conducted in 2001 found that malaria is responsible for 30% of all under-five deaths in Nigeria. It also accounts for a considerable percentage of low birth weight babies. The study also shows that the high level of malaria infections in rural communities correlates well with the very low level of environmental sanitation.

The above findings are consistent with the experience of Physicians the country where their estimate shows that malaria accounts for over 70 percent of all pediatric out-patient cases and 50 percent of all hospital admissions among under-five age group at Hospitals. Malaria has also robbed many poor families of their disposable income and worsened their poverty as it accounts for about 40% of healthcare costs for families in these poor communities.

This project provides families with malaria prevention education, life-saving medicines and scientifically proven cost-effective malaria vector control technologies such as insecticide treated bed nets.

The target is to protect 60,000 families from malaria related deaths and disability by February 2022.

THE FACTS

According to United States Nigeria Malaria Fact Sheet, Malaria is a major public health problem in Nigeria where it accounts for more cases and deaths than any other country in the world. Malaria is a risk for 97% of Nigeria’s population. The remaining 3% of the population live in the malaria free highlands.

Malaria kills 30 Nigerian children every hour, the spate of malnutrition worsens. Rural dwellers are the worst hit because of poor or lack of access to quality health care. Some communities in Shinkafi Local Area are populated with the economically disadvantaged, who could neither afford the high cost of malaria treatment nor able to provide a nourishing diet for cognitive development of the children. This project seeks to save up to 1,000 children within the geographical location.

THE SOLUTION

This project will provide a nourishing breakfast, deworming pills, multivitamin supplements, early detection and treatment of malaria, Hypertension and implementing actions which integrate the communities as key players in both sensitization, prevention and treatment of malaria, malnutrition and hypertension in a project tagged "END Malaria and Malnutrition in Nigeria".

PROJECT GOAL

The project will reduce mortality, poverty level and improve life quality as parents will not need to spend on malaria treatment or malnutrition.

There will also be an increased knowledge of parents on prevention of malaria and correct nutritional practices. Over 1,000 children's cognitive functions and physical development, and life quality will be improved to facilitate effective learning as does their urban counterparts. As the project will provide free prompt malaria diagnosis and treatment, give a nutrition specific interventions to 20,000 poor economic background children in 2 years, in Shinkafi and neighboring local areas of Zamfara State. Also, help early diagnosis and treatment of Hypertension in women within the location.
