Support the education of the Mayan jungle communities

We are a group of young people from two neighboring communities that live in the Sierra del Lacandón National Park within the Maya Biosphere Reserve, the largest in Central America. The Reserve is located in Petén, northern Guatemala. Our communities are protectors of the jungle and traditional Mayan knowledge.

Due to environmental restrictions, telephone and internet access is very limited and during the COVID19 pandemic, children and young people were unable to take classes or have access to educational materials. We have a project as young people to create a community network and a community digital center that will help us strengthen education and communication in our communities to continue doing our job as guardians of the forest, combat climate change and deforestation.

With the support of friendly organizations and communities we are learning how to set up a community intranet network that allows all members of the community to access educational content and about our history and culture, but also connect it to the internet to share our stories with the world.

In October, a group of colleagues from a friend university will visit us to help us connect our network. We are looking for solidarity donations to buy the necessary electronic equipment: a computer, raspberry, electricity regulator, routers and cables, to fulfill the dream of installing our community intranet
