Martin’s Journey with Autism: A Father’s Plea for Help

Hello, my name is Jean Carlos Galvis Osorio and I am the father of Martín Galvis Castañeda, a 4-year-old boy with autism. He was diagnosed with autism when he was 8 months old. The support I ask for is to take him to his therapies since the health insurance does not always provide them, and paying for them privately is very expensive. But Martín needs them because he hits his head, he strikes himself with the pavement and we get very upset, my wife and I, because we don’t know how to help him. Martín receives language, stimulation, and behavior therapies, and when he doesn’t get them, he loses his routine and loses control again. We ask for help to buy him some sound isolators because when he goes out on the street, the noises overwhelm him and that makes him lose control and he covers his ears with his hands.

To continue with the therapies, I work as a security guard and my salary only allows me to buy a little food, to buy Martín’s milk, since he only drinks porridge and ensures. He doesn’t eat solid foods, and my salary is insufficient because I also have to pay rent. The health insurance gives us the ensures, but when they run out we have to make an appointment again and sometimes the appointments are delayed and the food takes almost a month to arrive. And that also causes a collapse for Martín, because that is his food. We are from Calima Darién, Valle del Cauca, Colombia.
