Story
Hello everyone,
I am Tharinee Ratanasatien, a community-based Artist-Activist known for embracing constraints and limitations as catalysts for creativity. My work is grounded in creating socially engaged art activities and art pieces that leverage limitations of time, spaces, materials, social pressures, and community problems as sources of inspiration.
I am currently embarking on an art project aimed at supporting Tubtim Shrine in Bangkok, Thailand.
The project is centered in the heart of Bangkok, particularly in the Pathumwan area, which is owned by Chulalongkorn University. The university, while committed to education, is paradoxically expelling local communities to make way for commercial developments, like condominiums and department stores.
The central issue this project aims to address is the potential loss of cultural heritage due to rapid urbanization and the displacement of local communities. In particular, Tubtim Shrine, a cultural symbol with over a century of history, faces the threat of being overshadowed by commercial ventures, erasing the neighborhood's deep-rooted identity.
The funds are crucial to the successful execution of the "Lost Sanctum: Urban Solitude" art project. These resources will facilitate the creation of an experimental sculpture made from burnt incense ashes, transformed using shellac dye, which will spell out the name of Tubtim Shrine. These sculptures will be placed on public floors, eliciting reactions from passersby. The reactions, captured through video and photographs, will be the actual work exhibited in a contemporary art gallery.
The project is scheduled to take place during November 2023, with the exhibition planned for December 2023. The funds are needed to cover the costs associated with creating the sculptures, installing them in public locations, documenting viewers' reactions, and curating the final exhibition.
The funds collected will be allocated as follows:
1. Materials: Purchase of materials for creating the sculpture, including burnt incense, shellac dye, and plaster.
2. Installation and Transportation: Covering the costs of installing the sculptures in public locations within the city.
3. Documentation: Expenses for capturing video and photographs of viewers' reactions.
4. Exhibition Costs: Costs related to curating and hosting the final exhibition in a contemporary art gallery.
5. Public Relations: Budget for promoting the project, creating awareness, and fostering dialogue around the preservation of cultural heritage.
Your generous support will not only help bring this meaningful project to life but will also contribute to raising awareness about the preservation of cultural heritage and the challenges it faces in our ever-changing urban environments.
Join me in transforming limitations into opportunities for creativity and in making a profound statement on the importance of preserving cultural heritage. Your contribution will help bridge the gap between tradition and progress.
Thank you for your support!
