Basic supplies for families in Bogotá, Colombia

Hello everyone,

My name is Juan Nicolás Plazas, I am 23 years old and I live in the city of Bogotá, Colombia. I am a final year student of International Relations and Political Studies at the Universidad Nueva Granada in Bogotá.

I am a native of Bogotá, I was born and have lived here all my life, except for a few years that I lived in Europe.

Red rags on the windows, ask for help!

Currently Due to the crisis caused by the coronavirus, many families have lost their job and their only livelihood due to quarantine and do not have any state aid.

Many of the neediest families have put up red flags outside their windows as a sign of food emergency. Currently in various parts of Bogota we can see red rags everywhere since most of these families depend on their daily earnings.

A collaboration to help Bogotá's people

For that reason, with a group of friends from the university we decided to make a collection to buy food and personal hygiene items for the families that need it the most.

In coordination with local markets we have established a price of 32,000 Colombian pesos ($ 8.35 USD approx) per aid package that consists of 3 pounds of rice, 1 pound of sugar, 1 pound of peas, 190 grams of pasta, 1 pound of salt , 1/2 pound of chocolate, 1 pound of bread flour, 1 roll of toilet paper, 1 bucket of chicken broth, 1 sachet of powdered soda, 1 sachet of gelatin, 1 pound of lentil, 1 small toothpaste, 1 toothbrush, 1 small oil, and 1 panela.

The beneficiaries

This project is based in Bogotá, our city, since we have seen the problems that many families experience. The aid will be delivered to the most disadvantaged areas of Bogotá, such as: Usme, Bosa, Soacha, Cazuca, among others.

The objective is to help more than 50 families who have lost their only livelihood and have no means to feed themselves, in many cases these families have to choose between paying rent or buying food, which is why many of these have been evicted from their homes.

We will count and use the donations carefully. The more funds received, the more families will be helped.

The photos are taken from the newspaper El Espectador in a very recent report on the situation of families in the poorest neighborhoods of Bogotá.
