Global Fight Against COVID-19

Started in China by year end of 2019 and currently spreading rapidly around the world, COVID-19 (or Coronavirus Disease 2019) has infected more than 500,000 people in 202 countries within four months of its inception.

What is COVID-19?

World Health Organization (WHO) defines coronavirus as a large family of viruses found in both animals and humans. When infected, it causes illnesses ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).

On the other hand, COVID-19 is a new strain of coronavirus that has not been previously identified in humans. The first outbreak was reported in Wuhan, China last December 2019.

How Dangerous Is It?

With death rate averaging 5%, COVID-19’s consequences are now being felt internationally in different life aspects and forms. The crisis has demonstrated the vulnerability of public health care systems and the fragility of supply chain in multiple consumer industries all over the world – both affecting people’s lives and their fight against this pandemic.

• Most businesses have been shut down for the duration of community lockdowns among affected areas leaving only essentials sector operational. With this and as lockdowns continue, economic activity will further slow down without no way of knowing when things will normalize again.

• With the onset of community lockdowns, families have stocked up with all the necessities they can buy including protective goods such as face masks, gloves, hand sanitizers, etc. This affected greatly our healthcare industry as they face the fight against COVID-19 with low to no inventory of protective gears that they need to help patients.

• Technology are now being fully maximized beyond its capacity as business and education sectors have now moved all transactions online – e.g. e-learning tools, teleconferencing for office meetings, tele-health for out-patient care, etc.

• With businesses moving to work-from-home operations style, it is disadvantageous for most service sector employees as their job tasks are mostly office-based, require physical presence, or hourly/daily paid (no work, no pay). Affected families in third world and developing countries are now frightened not from the spreading disease, rather from the anxiety of how they will survive without financial support.

Call for Worldwide Cooperation

The COVID-19 pandemic serves a call for all communities to unite and cooperate across multiple shared dilemmas. World Health Organization (WHO) is working hard to coordinate action worldwide and is leading global communications on status and on what we need to do to flatten the curve of this pandemic. They have opened the COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund for anyone from anywhere to send in their donations to support all countries in preventing, detecting and responding to the pandemic.

We are calling members of the Airfunding Worldwide Community to help us raise funds and support WHO’s cause to ultimately win the fight against COVID-19. Donations will be used to fund the following activities:

1. Putting in place activities to track and understand the spread of the virus;

2. Ensuring patients get the care they need;

3. Buying and shipping essential supplies such as masks, gloves and protective wear for frontline workers;

4. Producing evidence-based guidelines and advice, and making sure health workers and responders get the information and training to detect and treat affected patients;

5. Producing guidance for the general public and for particular groups on measures to take to prevent the spread and prevent themselves and others; and,

6. Accelerating efforts to develop vaccines, tests and treatments.
