Help our beloved daughter Alexa FIGHT Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma

Hello everyone,

I am Shinette Cavite from Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines. I created this project to support to my daughter's health. She is Alexa Stephanie Cavite.

Early Symptoms and Tests

Learning that our daughter has cancer makes us feel like our world has been turned upside down. Our initial thoughts were "How could this happen to my child?" and "How will we get through this?

In February 2020, our daughter, Alexa Stephanie Cavite, felt chest and back pains, shortness of breath and explainable body malaise. We immediately consulted a physician to arm ourselves with information about her condition.

Alexa had undergone laboratory tests. Her chest X-ray found a Right Hilar-Para tracheal mass and her CT scan result was interpreted an enlarge thymus. Our lack of understanding of this illness had opted us a second opinion.

We consulted other physicians who requested us to repeat the laboratory tests. Her chest's CT scan showed a heterogeneously enhancing cystic solid mass in the anterior mediastinum (size 5.6 x 6.3 x 5.7 cm). This may represent a Thymoma; as Lymphoma was also considered. Next, the core needle biopsy had shown a small round cell tumor with morphologic features of Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

The Final Diagnose as Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma

On April 16, 2020, one day after her 16th birthday, Alexa was rushed to the hospital due to dry cough and difficulty of breathing. Upon admission, laboratory work-up was done and she was monitored for difficulty of breathing and other unusual symptoms. CT scan of chest was done and there was an interval increase in size of the mediastinal mass ( 7.3 x 9.7 x 8.6 cm) as compared on the previous (5.6 x 6.3 x 5.7 cm) and a moderate pericardial effusion was noted.

Because of these findings, her hema-oncologist urgently scheduled a 2D-echo and bone marrow aspiration and intrathecal chemotherapy followed by an IV chemotherapy (initial dose).

Starting May 4, she undergo chemotherapy twice a month for about 5 months.
